A chance to experience the brilliant Arditti Quartet, the world’s greatest exponents of the contemporary string quartet repertoire. Tonight’s programme provides an insight into their uncompromising finesse and authority, opening with Beethoven’s magnificently visceral, visionary Grosse Fuge – a portal into new music. Harrison Birtwistle’s Tree of Strings evokes the haunting beauty of the Hebridean landscape, while Frenchman Pascal Dusapin takes the wit of Samuel Beckett as his model. Alfred Schnittke’s profoundly dramatic, elegiac work, based on Russian sacred music, brings this compelling evening to a close.
